The Grey Wolf and the Adventurer of a Thousand Returns: An Expedition in the Ancestral Pine Forest
The salty wind of the ocean did lash the docks of Mur County Center that morn, whilst I did stroll, mine ivory quill in hand and mine spirit as free as the seagulls. ‘Twas there, ‘twixt the cries of merchants and the lapping of waves, that I did spy a man with a gaze as deep as the abyss. Sano Fynn, a war orphan from the distant lands of the West, wandering like a leaf borne by the wind.
« I came to this land to find myself », he did say, his eyes lost toward the horizon where the sea did meet the sky. « Yet Arche Terre, thou seest, hath decided to test me… and not always with kindness. » Intrigued, I did bid him follow me to the Gazette of Arche Terre building, where, a soda in hand, he did tell me his tale.
His story? A quest as perilous as it was poetic: to find the lair of the Spider Queen, she who doth weave terror upon the roads of Durakiss. « Taylor… or mayhap Tyler, it matters not, did promise me that if I did slay this beast, the paths would be free of her brood for a fortnight », he did explain with a sly smile, « and I, a humble mercenary with no ties, did believe I could achieve it. For a handful of coins, verily. »
But the Ancestral Pine Forest, it seemed, had other plans. As he did search the undergrowth, a band of brigands did appear from nowhere, blades in hand. « The visibility was poor, and the faction guard who did try to save me… did not survive », he did murmur, his gaze suddenly darkened. « ‘Twas then that a grey wolf, as massive as a boulder, did appear. It did sweep mine attackers aside with a single paw… as Erevan himself might have done. »
His quest interrupted, Sano did choose wisdom: to return and prepare anew. « A lone adventurer is a vulnerable one. One must have a team, spells, and above all… clear sight », he did advise, scratching his chin. « And mayhap a touch of luck, as well. »
« Even the grey wolf doth know when to retreat to leap higher. For the truest cunning, that which Erevan doth cherish, is not to conquer at all costs… but to survive to tell the tale. And sometimes, the greatest adventure is knowing when to turn back. »
